The World's Shortest Escalator

About four years ago, I stumbled upon a video about the world's shortest escalator.  I found the small escalator fascinating.  Since I was already set on moving to Japan, I put it on my bucket list.  A few years later, I finally have the chance to go see it.  A lot of anticipation had been building up surrounding this little machine.  My girlfriend was less than impressed but said she would oblige in helping me find it.

After some travel in and around the Yokohama area, we take a peak.  There it was in all it's glory.  Truth be told, I really was excited to ride it.  The smile you see on my face is of pure joy.  I almost yelled at the escalator when I first saw it.  Now, the reason I wanted to ride it was because it's a fairly unique site.

Since living in Japan, I've been bombarded with advertisements to see all of the famous sites.  I've been so flooded with images that when I eventually see these sites, I'm let down.  The Shibuya crossing and Harajuku were two of these sites that were a huge let down upon first seeing them.  Neither of these were a surprise to me.  I saw countless photos in Japanese media and videos online, before my trip to Japan.  When I finally had the chance to see them, it was nothing special and wasn't a surprise at all.  My first journey to Japan was to Sapporo, during the snow festival for this very reason.

At Harajuku, there was a catch.  No body told me about the greasers in Yoyogi park, just a football field away.  This was a much more enjoyable surprise, compared with kids dressed in silly clothes.

I like the path less traveled.  Even though, I knew exactly what to expect with the World's Smallest Escalator, it was still a joy to me.

Attempting to Finish My Korean Videos

It's been almost two months since I last posted a video on Korea.  Two months!  Can you believe that?  Well, a lot has happened to me since I last posted a video.  I moved into a new apartment, got hit by a car while riding a bicycle, started up school, and had to practice for the speech contest. I'm hoping that if I have the time, I will talk about each of these incidents.  For now, I'm just trying to finish up the last few videos I have about Korea.

I don't know if you remember or not but all of these videos are from when I was in Korea last year.  It's taken me the longest time to get around editing these pieces.  I really enjoy putting them together but it's hard to balance a hobby with my free time.

I really wish that putting these kind of videos was my full time job. Alas, it's not.  There is a little revenue that I get from it but it's not much.  Better than nothing right?  It all really depends on how many people are watch or reading my content.  At the moment, not so much.  That's ok though!  :)

At the moment, I am attempting to upload part six of nine, of my Korean series.  It's a video about the National War Museum of Korea.  Youtube is kind of being a pain and not processing the videos.  I've tried about six times so far and am getting really frustrated in the process.  It would be nice to get it up now but if not, I'll try and get it up by this Wednesday.  Remember, the video is finished, it's just youtube that isn't co-operating.

Top Ten Countries

After about two years of continuous posting on youtube, I have gained a subscriber base of just a little over 1,100. I'm always curious where my views come from and who is watching. Here are the Top Ten Counties watching my channel.

1. USA
2. Japan
3. U.K.
4. Canada
5. Germany
6. Australia
7. Netherlands
8. Mexico
9. Poland
10. Ireland

A pretty interesting block for the top ten!

As for male to female: 68% male and 32% female. I'm not completely surprised by this.

What age group do most of my videos do best in? 45-54 year olds! That is something that really surprises me.

As far as the rest of the world, I have around fifteen subscribers in the middle east. Most of which are in Saudia Arabia (they can watch my videos there?). Only five viewers from Africa (two in Morocco, two in South Africa, and one in Mauritius).

The second strongest group of subscribers in Asia is not S. Korea. I thought this would be the case since most of my videos thus far have been about Japan or Korea. The second strongest group is Malaysia. South Korea is number three! I'm sure this number will change over the next few weeks as most of my videos will be specifically about S. Korea. I have EIGHT more to post!

What is nice to know about all this information is that there are plenty of people who are interested in other cultures. I try to present a fairly neutral view about Japan but I generally sit on the more positive side. There is a lot that I could complain about living here but I try to stay away from that.

Anyway, a new video this Wednesday! It's going to be about my first reaction to everything I saw in Korea. A whole lot of ''Whoa, this is crazy!'' Things from fire hydrants, exercise equipment, subways, all of that stuff. Just a nice video of my being surprised with everything Korea had to offer!

How many more episodes? Where to next? And other thoughts...

After completing the eighth episode, I thought about what footage I have and how many episodes I can make of the rest of the footage from Japan. Surprisingly, I have enough, which I would assume lends me around 15-25 more episodes (2-5 minutes a piece).

Taiwan on the other hand... I'm not so sure what I will be able to pull from my tapes. Some of the camera movements are less than desirable and nauseating. I didn't document my trip as well compared to Japan. This would make me guess I might be able to pull together around 10 episodes total. For now, I'm ok with that. And won't be worrying about putting the Taiwan pieces together for a while.

Now, where to next? What is my next adventure?

(Aboard a train in Hokkaido, bound for Tokyo)

Considering I lack funds to go anywhere far, I'll probably do some episodes that would take place around the Pacific NW. I have already shot a few outings and will probably shoot some more.

When I began working on this project, I neglected to even consider my own backyard. Not only are people interested in International travel but shorter trips as well. Take for example someone who might be from San Fransisco and would like to know what there is to see in and around Portland...

The content for a show like this is nearly infinite.

With regards to International travel. I really really really want to go back to Sapporo; it was that awesome. But I am open to other destinations. I have friends in Europe and airfare to London or Frankfurt is much cheaper than to Tokyo, language wouldn't be much of a barrier, as well as cultural customs.

I'll have to make a top ten list sometime of places I want to go, of course, its always changing...
